How to raise your ACT score from 28 to 32 on the enhanced ACT

How can I raise my ACT score from 28 to 32?

To raise your ACT score from 28 to 32, raise the average of English, Math, and Reading by about four points. On the enhanced ACT, Science no longer counts toward the composite. Take an official ACT practice test, find the question types you miss most in each core section, practice them daily, and retake an official test every three to four weeks. English is often a good place to start because it tests a limited set of rules.

Good fit when

You scored around 28 on the ACT or a practice test and are aiming for 32 or higher.

Before you choose

The higher you go, the fewer mistakes you can afford. This plan is a guide, not a promise.

How the enhanced ACT composite works

Since 2025, the ACT composite is the average of three sections: English, Math, and Reading, each scored 1 to 36. Science is optional and does not count toward the composite.

Section Questions Time Counts in composite
English 50 35 minutes Yes
Math 45 50 minutes Yes
Reading 36 40 minutes Yes
Science (optional) 40 40 minutes No, reported separately

To go from 28 to 32, you need about 12 more total points across English, Math, and Reading. For example, raising English by 5, Math by 4, and Reading by 3 gets you there.

The plan

These week counts are Dolphin’s planning guide, not ACT figures.

Week 1: Baseline. Take an official ACT practice test under timed conditions. For each section, list the question types you missed.

Weeks 2 to 4: English first. English tests a limited set of grammar, punctuation, and writing rules. Learn the rules behind your misses, then practice them until you stop missing them.

Weeks 2 to 6: Math in parallel. Sort math misses by topic, start with the topics you miss most, and review every miss until you can solve a new question on it without help.

Week 5: Official practice test 2. Compare section by section. Shift time toward what did not improve.

Weeks 6 to 8: Reading and pacing. Reading at this level is about finding evidence fast. Practice timed passages and note which question types slow you down.

Week 9: Official practice test 3. Confirm progress and fix pacing in your slowest section.

Weeks 10 to 11: Sharpen. Targeted practice on remaining mistakes, then lighter review before test day.

Habits that matter above 30

  • Keep an error log. If a mistake shows up three times, it gets its own practice session.
  • Use the extra time. The enhanced ACT gives more time per question than before. Use it to check answers on English and Math.
  • Do not skip review. More practice tests without reviewing misses rarely raises the score.

Frequently asked questions

Is going from 28 to 32 on the ACT realistic?

Yes, for many students with focused practice over two to three months. It means raising the average of English, Math, and Reading by four points, which usually comes from cutting repeated mistakes and building accuracy on harder questions. It is not guaranteed. Dolphin's Score Improvement Guarantee does not cover a student starting at 28: it applies to official ACT starting scores of 26 or lower and targets a 5-point increase.

Does Science count toward the ACT composite?

Not on the enhanced ACT. The composite is the average of English, Math, and Reading. Science is optional and reported separately, so check whether your colleges want it before spending prep time there.

Which ACT section is easiest to raise?

English is often a good place to start because many questions test a limited set of grammar and punctuation rules. But the best section to start with is the one where your practice test shows the most repeated, fixable mistakes.

How many ACT practice tests should I take?

Plan on at least three official ACT practice tests a few weeks apart, with focused practice between them. Review every miss before taking the next one.
